Our skin is the largest organ in (or rather, on) our body. And while we don’t often think about it, what we put on our skin can be absorbed, entering our blood stream and cells, and wreaking havoc on our health. This is why it’s so important to pick personal hygiene, skin care, and beauty products that are free from toxins and hazardous chemicals.
Sadly, one of the most shocking and scariest things about beauty/personal hygiene products is that so many harmful chemicals are used as ingredients! Just as we can’t assume that all food products from the grocery store are safe to eat, we also can’t assume that all personal hygiene and beauty products are safe to use.
While the list of chemicals and toxins to avoid may seem overwhelming, there are definitely some great resources to help us navigate the beauty aisles. The Environmental Working Group, for instance, has a FANTASTIC resource called Skin Deep that is super user friendly and helps consumers like you and me make smarter and safer purchases (check it out here!)
And just for fun, this week I put together a video of some of my very favorite healthy beauty and skin care products! Check it out!
Everyone Lotion – I buy this lotion from Whole Foods but it is available from Amazon. It’s got a great scent, is very moisturizing, and lasts forever! Plus you can use it on your entire body, face, and hands!
Destiny Boutique Charcoal Face Wash – I love how this face wash lathers, and my skin always feels clean and refreshed afterwards! A little goes a long way so the bottle lasts a long time. This product is available from Amazon.
Piper Wai Deodorant – I’m a new user of this natural deodorant, but so far so good! It’s got a bit of a minty scent that I enjoy, and goes on well (even though you have to apply it with your fingers).
Juice Beauty – LOVE this line from Gwyneth Paltrow! I use the antioxidant serum, nutrient moisturizer, and SPF 30 oil-free moisturizer. The nutrient moisturizer especially is super rich and moisturizing. The line also includes other skin care products as well as cosmetics, all of which are organic and loaded with plant extracts!
Carolla’s Skin Creme – I can’t speak highly enough of this creme! If you have dry hands, elbows, feet (or honestly any other area of dry skin) then you NEED this stuff! I use it as lip moisturizer as well, and the website offers 100+ ideas/tips for uses.
Now Essential Oil – As I mentioned, I’m currently not very well versed in the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. However, I have found essential oils to be a safe (and delightful!) way to make my house smell yummy! Furthermore, essential oils can be added to a carrier oil (like coconut oil) and used as perfume. The sleep blend is citrusy and soothing 🙂
