It was Gandhi who famously said, “be the change you want to see in the world.”

For me, that change is people falling so crazy in love with life that they cannot help but to spread their joy and passion to others, to lift others up, and to be a light in this world.

But how do we get to this point? How do we ignite the fire that fuels our passion and zest? Undoubtedly, health has a bit to do with it. Consider Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The idea is, quite simply, that we must build a foundation, ensuring our basic needs are met, in order to grow and thrive.

The basis of our being, our most fundamental needs, include our physiological and biological requirements. That is, we need to breathe, eat and hydrate, sleep, maintain homeostasis, and excrete waste.

Only after our most basic needs are met can we begin to worry about our safety, which includes feeling stability and security in our homes, employment and resources, family, and our health.

In turn, once our physiological and safety needs are met, we truly start to grow. It is after these most basic needs are met that we focus on friendship, intimacy, and a sense of connectedness and belonging.

This love and belonging allows us to cultivate self-esteem, independence, and achievement. We can begin to seek deeper knowledge and meaning, and search for and appreciate the beauty in the world around us.

All of these layers lead to the ability to reach self-actualization, which is defined as realizing our potential and seeking personal growth and experiences which will lead to self-fulfillment. And finally, once we have reached self-actualization, we are able to transcend and help others to do the same! What a beautiful process!

So it seems, as I mentioned earlier, that our health, which is established within the first two layers of the hierarchy, plays an integral role in allowing us to develop deeper relationships and an understanding and appreciation of the world around us. It is our health that ultimately allows us to grow, realize our full potential, and share our gifts with others!

My wish is for you to take care of yourself, to nourish your body, mind, and spirit, so that you may realize a deeper meaning, love, and zest for life, and help others to do the same. Each day I strive to lead by example, to do as Gandhi encouraged and be this change I’d like to see in the world. I hope you’ll join me!
